Fair Weather Lore
- Red sky at night is a sailor’s delight.
- A rainbow in the afternoon means good weather is coming soon.
- Morning gray signals a clear day.
- High clouds mean fair weather.
- Locusts sing when the air is hot and dry.
Rain or Storm Lore
- If there is dew on the grass, rain won’t come to pass.
- Rain before seven, fine before eleven
- Red sky in the morning, sailors be warned.
- Spiders leave their webs when rain is approaching.
- Ants are very active just before a rainstorm.
- Flowers close up when a rainstorm is coming.
- If the oak flowers before the ash, we shall have a splash.
- If the ash flowers before the oak, we shall have a soak.
- Thunder in the autumn means a cold winter is coming.
- Birds flock together just before a rainfall.
Wind Lore
- No weather is ill if the wind be still.
- A wind from the south means rain is coming.
- A backing wind means storms are near, but a veering wind will clear the sky.
- If the wind is blowing at night, it will rain the next day.
- If the wind is blowing in one direction for awhile then changes direction, it will soon rain.
- If the crow flies low the wind will blow.
Snow Lore
- A first snow that falls on unfrozen ground indicates a mild winter.
- Season of snow means fruit will grow.
- When chipmunks store a lot of nuts early in autumn it means it will be a snowy winter.
Animal Lore
- Fish jump high when rain is nigh.
- A rooster who crows as it is going to bed wakes up with a wet head.
- A horse with a thick coat early on in the cold season means it will be a rough winter.
- Bluebirds begin to chatter when it is about to rain.
- When cows lie down in a field, rain is approaching.
- When squirrels collect nuts early in the season, the winter will be rough.
- When a sea gull sits on the sand, good weather is never at hand.
- If the sparrows are chirping, a thaw is approaching.
Moon Lore
- When you see a ring around the moon, rain is coming soon.
- Two full moons in a month mean a flood is coming.
- Clear moon means there will be frost soon.
- If the moon is pale, it is going to rain.
Season Lore
- If it is warm in the middle of March then the next summer will also be warm.
- A rainy spring follows a windy winter.
- A warm summer season follows a cold winter.
- If the leaves are still on the trees late in the autumn then it will be a rough winter.
- If the month of November is warm, it will be a rough winter.
- If February is cold, the summer will be a nice one.
