The kids are back in school (or will be shortly), and, hopefully, you’ve about made it through the items on your August financial list. Now that September is about begin, it’s time to think about what needs to be done in the fall and winter. Here are 5 money moves that can get you on the right financial track as we head into the home stretch for this year:

1. Taxes Check

Don’t forget that, for those who pay estimated taxes, September 15th is the due date. Make sure to pay your estimated taxes on time. You can set up an automatic payment plan if you like, or pay electronically, so that you don’t miss the deadline.

You should also make plans to review your efforts to secure tax credits and tax deductions. Make sure your records are in order, and consider consulting your tax professional about what end of the year moves you can make to increase your tax efficiency.

2. Review Your Beneficiaries

While you’re considering your taxes, you might as well think about your estate. Make sure the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies and your retirement accounts are up-to-date. Double check your will and your estate plan while you are at it. Power of attorney, health care proxy and the structures of any trusts you have should be considered. Make sure everything is up to date and your money is all set to go where you want it to, in the event that you die or become incapacitated. This is especially important if you have not updated your information since a divorce.

3. Begin Winterizing Your Home

September is a good time to begin winterizing your home. Depending on where you live, you might have a little more time, but now is the time to consider what needs to be done, and make a plan to cover any expenses that might crop up.

Consider energy efficient windows, or additional insulation. This will help your home be more energy efficient, saving you money throughout the winter. Plus, there is still a tax credit for making these changes through the end of 2010. Get some bids on the work, and find out whether there are city and state programs, in addition to the federal tax credit, that can help you offset the cost.

4. Begin Planning Holiday Travel

You’ll end up with better availability — and better prices — if you book holiday travel early. We’re already planning to buy airplane tickets for my in-laws so that we can avoid the scramble for seats, and the higher fares, that come as the fall progresses. Especially if you plan to travel for Thanksgiving, now is the time to make your bookings. You can also book for Christmas travel now. Book with an service that guarantees your price, and you can get a refund if the price actually drops below what you pay.

5. Update Your Resume

The job market is still likely to take some time to recover. However, that doesn’t mean that you should just sit on your hands. Make sure you are ready for opportunities that may come along and update your resume. You can also prepare a template cover letter for a position you might be interested in. Also, update your network, getting in touch with your business and professional contacts. Don’t start off begging for a job; simply make contact and briefly catch up. If you are ready now, you won’t be left frantically trying to make things happen when a good job opportunity crops up.

Post from:

Summer is coming to an end; August is your last chance to do a number of things before school starts and “normal life” returns. Your July financial checklist should be just about finished, and you should be getting ready for everything that comes with fall.

August is a great time to look ahead to the school year, and plan your finances for the rest of the year. Here are 6 things you can do in August to keep your finances on track:

1. Begin Back to School Shopping

This is probably a no-brainer for anyone with school age children. Now is the time to look for back to school sales, coupons and promotions. You can find some good deals on summer clothing (it’s clearance time) that most kids can wear for at least the month of September — and maybe even October.

2. Budget for School Activities

If your children are involved in extracurricular activities, begin making a plan to pay for them. Look at last year’s costs, and use those costs to estimate your expenses this school year. You can begin setting money aside in a high yield savings account so that the cost of paying for sports, arts, music and other activities don’t come as such a blow to the budget. Figure out how much time you have before different payments are due, and decide how much of each paycheck needs to go in the special savings account.

For those whose family budgets are tight, now might be the time to have a heart to heart with the children about limiting some of the extracurricular activities. Encourage them to decide what is most important, and focus on that.

3. Consider Car Shopping

If you have been thinking about buying a car, now might be the time to start looking around for one. Many dealers are beginning to slash prices in order to clear the lots for the next round of new models. This can be a great time to buy if you are in the market for a new car, since you can get 2010 models on discount.

You might also be able to find some good deals on used cars and lease returns. The turnover in the model year for cars can affect other dealers as well.

4. Shop Seasonal Sales

As you might expect, August is a time of good seasonal sales. Air conditioners, lawn mowers (and other yard equipment) and outdoor furniture all go on sale in August. As summer winds down, retailers want to clear out their summer merchandise to make room for autumn — and even holiday — items. Begin looking for good deals on summery things you have been meaning to buy. You could still get a few weeks out of a new patio set, and you’ll be all ready for next summer.

5. Review Your Insurance

Now is a good time to check your insurance policies. Review your auto, life and health coverage to make sure that it is adequate. Consider the needs of your family, whether it is growing or shrinking. It might be time to drop some unneeded insurance coverage, or add coverage you have been lacking. If you don’t have disability insurance, now might be a good time consider it. If your insurance is no longer meeting your needs, check with your agent about when you can make changes to your coverage.

6. Replenish Your Emergency Fund

There are a number of things that can happen during the summer that cause you to tap into your emergency fund. If you have used money from your emergency fund, make a plan to replenish it as soon as possible. Budget a repayment plan if necessary. If you don’t begin replenishing your emergency fund, you may find it inconveniently low when you need the money later.

Post from: <a

After all, with companies laying off workers in force, those who kept their jobs had no desire leave and enter the job market. Now, though, there is evidence that workers are feeling more confident, ready to move on. More employees are quitting, and if you are tired of your current job, now might be the time to look for a new job.

The job hunt is never particularly fun, and you might be comfortable where you are with a good benefits package and a number of perks. But if you are tired of waiting for a raise, and would rather engage in salary negotiations outright, it might be a good time to quit and move on. If you don’t mind relocating, you might be able to increase your chances of finding solid employment. CNN Money offers a list of 25 places offering good job growth over the last nine years. Here are the top ten:

Lincoln County, SD

Williamson County, TX

Hays County, TX

Douglas County, CO

Fort Bend County, TX

Webb County, TX

Collin County, TX

Broomfield County, CO

Hamilton County, IN

Cache County, UT

Lots of these counties are in Texas. I was pleased, though, to see that my current place of residence, in Utah, made the top ten. We have weathered the economic downturn fairly well here, and there is decent job growth.

But, before you pull up stakes and move to one of the cities on CNN’s list, you might want to consider the kinds of jobs that are available.

What Type of Job Do You Want?

Depending on where you go, the job growth some areas are seeing may be in low skill, relatively low pay jobs. If you don’t have anything right now, or if you are looking for something to do in semi-retirement, this isn’t such a bad thing. Moving somewhere that has a number of jobs readily available, and a relatively low cost of living, might just answer your notions. But if you are looking for a high skill job, that offers higher pay, you may not be in luck.

In Cache County, for example, there are a number of jobs available in factories and in the service industries. However, even though the CNN Money article touts the presence of an university with major NASA grants (my husband worked on one), and some medical services companies, the plum jobs at these employers are difficult to come by. It’s competitive to find teaching jobs here as well. Before you move somewhere in search of a job, make sure that you understand the job market, and know what is actually available — and whether it is what you really want.

Lifestyle

Another consideration is the available lifestyle. I like living in Cache County. It has a small town feel, and it is nestled in the mountains. I love the outdoors, and there are numerous opportunities to camp, fish, hike, boat and more within a couple of hours. While slim on some offerings, for the size of the town, I have been pleasantly surprised at the range of restaurants, and the university offers cultural performances and opportunities that probably would not be normally available in this setting. What we can’t do here, we can usually do in Salt Lake, a little more than an hour away. I also like that the cost of living is fairly inexpensive.

However, this type of town doesn’t appeal to everyone. Many of the counties listed on CNN’s list have a distinctly rural flavor, and if you like the bright lights of the city, moving to look for a job may not be the best plan. Before you going haring after a job, make sure that you do research on local entertainment offerings, and other items that are important to you.

Moving to look for a new job can be a risky endeavor. Before you decide to take the plunge, make sure you run a cost-benefit analysis. Compare what you might have in a new town with what you have already, and what benefits you might receive. Don’t forget to factor in the costs associated with moving, and the emotional costs that your family will experience. It’s a big decision, and not one to be taken lightly.

Post from: <a

Make a plan or you could be like the millions of parents who spent approximately $564 per child last year on back-to-school shopping sprees (mostly on clothes). Of course your local retail stores love when you spend your money and they persuade you to open up your wallet by putting out all their new fall fashions. This influx of new fads works its charms on kids and parents alike, compelling them to buy, buy, buy – because, after all, no one wants to be out of style. Wrong. You can be fashionable and still save money by following these tips.

Plan Your Trip: It’s consequential that you have a plan in mind before you step out of the door to shop. Make an inventory of the clothes your children already have and can still use. After you list those items create a budget for the new clothes and do not deviate from it. Be up front with your kids; let them know that you are not going to spend money on all the latest fashion trends because next year they will be out of fashion too. Plan on purchasing the basics like khakis, jeans and shirts/blouses that can easily coordinate with each other – you are not buying single outfits such as a shirt, pants and shoes that don’t match with other clothing. Prepare to make your choices versatile.

Know the Sales Days: Scour the local paper, call the stores you plan on shopping at and find out when they are having their largest sales and, if possible, visit those stores at the beginning of the sale — before all the clothes are picked over. Find out if your state is offering a sales tax holiday and if so, shop then. Also, visit outlet malls for even greater savings.

Use Shopping Day Sense: After you’ve done all the hard work don’t crumble when you start to shop. Be disciplined; bring your list and know your budget. Don’t be distracted by ancillary sales. Keep your kids involved so they feel like they have some say in the clothes that they are going to wear. Be sure to maintain a cool demeanor and be firm; this may be a family shopping excursion but you are in charge.

Understand the Aftermath: It’s very important that you’re also prepared for the aftermath, or the consequences of your back-to-school shopping. If you have to use a credit card than make certain that you will be able to pay it off quickly, so as not to incur interest fees. Remember to think a few months ahead when other bills start to arrive. Will you have enough money to cover all of your debt?

If you plan right and use financial sense then you will save dollars and cents in the end. class="post_image alignleft frame" src="http://static.personaldividends.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/spreadsheet-lustfish.jpg" width="225" height="169" alt="checklist" />

It’s a fresh month. How are your finances coming along? June marked the halfway point in the year, and the June financial checklist reflected on your progress so far, and set the foundation for the next half of the year. Now July is here, and it is time to continue your efforts at keeping your finances on track. Here are 5 things to do this month to remain financially fit:

1. Consider Refinancing Your Home

If you haven’t already taken advantage of record low interest rates, now might be the time. Home buyers are not the only people benefiting from the current housing market. Those looking to refinance can save as well. Indeed, the rule of thumb for refinancing is to do so if you can get an interest rate that is at least 1% lower than your current rate. Look at your current situation, and see if refinancing might be right for you.

Just make sure that the savings you receive in interest are large enough to cover the fees associated with refinancing. Also, double check your current mortgage loan to see if there are costly prepayment penalties. Don’t do a cash refinance; simply refinance what you have, and consider doing it for a shorter term (15 or 20 years) than 30 years, especially if you have been in your home for more than five to seven years.

2. Set Up a Plan for Quarterly Taxes

If you paid quarterly taxes last month, and it was difficult to do it all at once, consider setting up a system. Pay your taxes once a month. There are three months between now and September. Take your quarterly tax amount, and divide it by three. That way, it will be more manageable to pay your taxes when September comes around.

3. Automate Your Finances

Consider the portions of your finances that you can automate. Sign up for direct deposit, or for automatic bill pay. You can also consider direct debit for recurring loan payments (such as a car loan). Set up automatic transfers that move money between your checking and savings accounts. This way, your money goes where it needs to automatically. This can help simplify your life quite a bit.

4. Re-evaluate Your Coupons

Now is a great time to go through your coupons. Check the expiration dates and get rid of the coupons that are no longer good. You can also organize your coupons by creating an organizer, and by assembling them in a way that is easily accessible. Create a system so that you don’t end up just throwing half of your coupons away. Also, make sure that your coupons are for items you normally buy. If you don’t normally get something, there is no sense in keeping the coupon until it expires.

5. Plan a Staycation

Instead of spending a great deal of money on a big vacation, consider a staycation. Your family doesn’t have to go across the country or half way around the world to enjoy a good time. Consider what is available in your own state or neighboring states, and then head out on a staycation. You can visit an attraction, go on a camping trip, or spend a long weekend exploring a national park.

July is a great time to take stock of your finances and then make a plan for a prosperous second half of the year. These items can help you get on the right track for the rest of the year.

Post from: <a

This can be a bad idea, and many people find themselves in huge amounts of debt to their credit cards. Getting into debt is easy; finding a way out can be harder than you may think. Although it is tough, it is not impossible to do you will just need to be focused.

Credit cards are never a good thing to own. They are designed to encourage you to buy more items on your card. It is far too easy to do, and many people pay with a credit card every time you leave the house. You have to break the cycle of these bad habits, and pay off the cards as soon as you can and go back to the old fashioned way of saving for items.

The key to reaching credit card debt relief is to know all of your finances, and keeping a track of them, knowing exactly where your money is going each month. If you do not know how much you are truly spending then how will you know how much you actually owe on your credit card?

Start by Knowing Where You Spend Money

The most important thing to do is track everything you spend in a month, by simply writing down every penny that you spend. This will tell you exactly where your money is going and where you could cut back and start saving. At the end of every month you will be able to see exactly you have spent and what on. Once you know what you are putting on your credit card then you can begin to deal with the problems you have.

Consolidate Your Credit Cards

If you like many people have more than one credit card; you need to transfer all of the balances to one card. This makes it more manageable for you if you know where all of your credit card debt is. Getting rid of the most expensive interest rated card is essential as you will be able to cut your debt down immediately.

There are always good credit card deals for people who transfer balances, and these are always worth looking at. They often give you a six month period to pay the credit card off with no interest added at all. You however have to want to pay the credit card off, there is no point taking up these offers, purely to end up with more credit card debt.

If you can it is always advisable to pay the balance off your card every month, if you insist on having a credit card then try to only use it for emergencies. Bear in mind that it isn’t your money that you are spending and every time you use it you are getting into debt and spending more than you think. In these worrying financial times, credit cards are being used to the maximum and people are finding themselves weighed down with the debt. You need to try as hard as you can to get out of the credit card debt, and take control of your finances and life.

Post from: Source: sxc.hu Photo: forwardcom

Today is April 15th, and if you haven’t filed your tax return, or filed for an extension, today is the day of truth. If you are scrambling to get everything together, take a deep breath, file for an extension (you don’t need a reason, just Form 4868), and make a resolution to do better next year. Filing an extension this year can give an extra six months to get your documents in order, and fill out your tax return in a way that doesn’t rush you into missing credits or deductions you might be entitled to. (Just remember that you still have to pay if you will owe money in taxes, even if you file an extension.) And while you are getting this year’s tax return put together, consider what you can do to avoid this problem going forward.

Tax Season Year Round

One of the most frustrating things about tax time is gathering all of the documentation and getting everything you need to fill out your tax return. one of the best things you can do is to be organized all year. Here are some ideas to help you keep your tax stuff in order all year, so that filling out your tax return is less stressful:

Use financial software: There are plenty of personal finance and business finance programs out there. Some programs are even free. Most are affordable. Financial software helps you keep track of tax deductible expenses easily, and can help you track income from various sources. It can also help you keep your investment accounts straight, and keep you updated on any number of financial situations that come up on taxes. At the end of the year, you can easily print out reports that will show you exactly what your situation is, and list your tax deductible expenses.

Consider categories: When using financial software, it is possible to use different categories to help you organize information. Think about the expenses that you itemize. You can create a category for charitable donations, and then label your transactions in the financial software. The same is true of business expenses. You can look at Schedule C and get a good idea of the categories available. Then, set up your financial software to coordinate. It’s a matter of looking at breaking things down by category in your end of the year report, and everything will correspond with what’s on your tax forms, so it becomes fairly easy to fill things in.

Keep documentation together throughout the year: Create a folder in your filing system for tax documentation. Keep charitable contribution receipts, information from investments you sell, business expense receipts and other documentation in that folder. When you get statements for mortgage interest, W-2 forms, 1099s, and other required information, add it to the file. That way, all of your supporting documentation is together when it’s time to prepare your return (or have someone prepare it for you). Once your tax return is prepared, get a large manila envelope and write the tax year on the outside. Then, put your supporting documents inside, along with your copy of the tax return.

Plan ahead: A good way to plan ahead for the tax year is to consider what is available. Look for credits and deductions (or ask a tax professional) that will be coming up in the year. If they make sense in your situation, plan out how you can take advantage of them in the normal course of your business or your personal finances. For instance, if you have been meaning to make energy upgrades to your home, this is a good year to do it, since it is the last year for generous green home improvement credits.

If you take an hour or two now to set up a system that can help you stay organized throughout the year, you will find that preparing your tax return next year is a lot less stressful.

Post from: Source: sxc.hu Photo: abeall

Many people make financial New Year’s resolutions to get their finances in shape. How are you doing? One way you can keep your finances on track is to create monthly checklists, breaking things down in smaller portions in order to better manage your cash flow. Hopefully, you’ve managed to get a good start on your finances in January. Now that the year is solidly under way, and you might be slowing down in terms of financial resolutions, consider these 5 items that can keep you fiscally fit in February:

File your tax return ASAP: This is especially true if you have a refund coming. The sooner you file, the sooner you get your refund. If you have a fairly large tax refund, you might consider revisiting your W-4. Adjust your withholding so that you have more take home money, rather than relying on your tax refund as a savings plan that yields no return. A tax professional might be able to help you with this, as well as helping you figure out how to increase your tax efficiency in 2010. If you owe money, getting your taxes figured now can give you time to save up between now and April 15. Just because you file your tax return now doesn’t mean you have to pay now.

Complete a home inventory: You should regularly update your list of what’s in your home, and what’s of value. This is especially true after the holidays, when you may have additional gifts of value. Document these items, and store your inventory in a safe place. One of the best ways to do this is to email it to yourself and save it in a special folder in your email account, or pay for web-based date back-up so that if your home and computer are destroyed, you still have access to your inventory via the Internet.

Check your credit report: This is a good time to check your credit report for errors. Remember that you get one free credit report each year from each of the three major credit bureaus (that’s three reports a year). You can access this through www.annualcreditreport.com. You can also usually get a three-bureau report with credit score from each bureau of from MyFico.com for between $35 and $50. Look for errors and fraudulent accounts. This is a good time to clean up your credit report, double check your score and consider other credit implications.

Consider your property tax assessment: Is your county or city appraising your home too high in order to get more in property taxes? You can actually challenge this assessment. If you think that your property tax assessment is too high, find out how to file a grievance. You can normally go to the assessor’s office to get the necessary steps in your area. If you have a case, you could save money in property taxes.

Look for seasonal discounts: February is the time that small consumer electronics, furniture and treadmills often go on sale. If you have been planning on making certain purchases, consider this month as a good time to make them. However, don’t just head out and buy something because it’s on sale. Make sure that it’s something you were planning on purchasing anyway. In the end, you want to make sure you are actually saving money — not looking for excuses to spend more of it.

February really is a great time to take stock of where you are at right now, and provides some excellent opportunities to help you improve your financial situation. The key is to plan ahead, and then stick to that plan.

Post from: Source: sxc.hu Photo: YM

Ah, the tax season!

While you are gathering up your information for the tax preparer and considering what sorts of deductions and credits you are eligible for your 2009 taxes, it is also a good time to start planning ahead for the coming year. One of the best things you can do for your finances in the coming year is to actually consider your options, and make tax wise plans for 2010. You can even discuss your possibilities with your tax professional when you go in to have your 2009 tax return prepared. Here are 5 tax moves to consider for 2010 (and we give you a bonus at the end which you may or may not be too keen on):

1. Buy a Home

This is a big one. The first time home buyer tax credit was extended by six months, so if you haven’t bought a home before, it could be worth a tax credit of up to $8,000. For those who are thinking that it’s about time to trade up, the government added an expansion worth up to $6,500 for those who have lived in the same place for five of the last eight years. While the $6,500 tax credit may not be worth deciding to buy a home out of the blue, it could be worth it if you have been planning to move in the next one to three years.

2. Upgrade the Energy Efficiency of Your Home

The government is offering a tax credit for green home improvements made through 2010. You can claim up to 30% of the first $5,000 you spend making energy upgrades to your home. There are bigger tax credits available for those who decide to install a solar home heating system or make other major overhauls. You can also combine these federal tax breaks with state and local tax breaks that may be available.

3. Enjoy Low Capital Gains Rates

If you have some investments you have been holding on to for a while, 2010 might be the year to sell them. Right now, the top rate on long term capital gains is 15%. However, starting in 2011, the top rate will return to 20%. If you have been thinking about cashing in on some of your investments, and you are in a higher tax bracket, it might be worth it to consult a financial and/or tax professional to see whether it is in your best interest to sell this year and avoid the higher tax rate.

4. Roth IRA Conversion

This has been generating a lot of interest lately. For 2010, the income restrictions associated with rolling over a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA are being lifted. (Realize that this only applies to rollovers; income restrictions on contributions to Roth IRAs remain in place.) In a Roth IRA, your money grows tax free, and you aren’t taxed when you take distributions. However, you should realize that you will be taxed on previously un-taxed amounts that you convert to the Roth IRA. Luckily, you can divide up these costs between your 2011 taxes and your 2012 taxes. Carefully consider whether this is the right move for you, consulting with a financial planner, since the Roth conversion doesn’t make sense across the board.

5. Consider Making Large Money Gifts to Your Grandchildren

Gift taxes are paid for by the giver. Everyone has a lifetime gift tax exclusion of $1 million, allowing them to avoid gift taxes on that amount. If you want to skip a generation, though, the tax exemption has been at $3.5 million. But next year things change, and that exemption returns to $1 million. But 2010 is a special year: There is no limit to the exemption. So you could give as much as you want this year, and take advantage of the Generation Skipping Tax Exemption. On top of that, other gifts that go beyond your exemption are taxed at a top rate of 35%, rather than next year’s 55% top rate. As you might imagine, if you are going to be generous, this is the year for it.

And finally,

Die in 2010

This year is a good year to die. For your heirs, at any rate. 2010 is the magical year of no estate tax. The estate tax exemption, which has been at $3.5 million for some time, is reverting back to $1 million in 2011. But for this year, there is no limit to the estate tax exemption, effectively eliminating estate taxes for 12 months. There are already some predictions that December 2010 could see an uptick in deaths as those bent on passing on their estates attempt to make sure that half of the value isn’t lost to a 55% top rate. Of course, there is a very real possibility that legislation could retroactively instate the estate tax for 2010.

Taxes: Planning Ahead

You can benefit from planning ahead. Understand what your options are, and think about the moves you can make throughout the year. Whether it is contributing to a 529 plan for a state tax break, keeping track of mileage traveled while doing charitable work, keeping track of possible itemizations, or paying points on a mortgage loan, if you think ahead and engage in proper planning, you can increase your tax efficiency each year.

Post from: <a

It has been a very exciting and eventful year for the fledgling site and we are proud to have achieved what we have in the last year. None of this could have been possible without your readership and support and we would like to take this time to express our appreciation.

We finished the year with 20 registered contributors and 14 published authors on the site. A total of 151 articles were published in 2009 averaging a little less than 1 every 2 days. Personal Dividends has been featured in many blog carnivals around the interwebs, some of the articles have been picked up and referenced from popular sites such as USA Today, WSJ.com and NPR and has been successful in creating a small buzz on the popular social media sites in addition to breaking the Wisebread’s Top 100 Personal Finance blogs ranking and staying there.

We have been trying really hard to make Personal Dividends into a Personal Finance and Lifestyle site and avoid getting bucketed into a narrow niche. Looking back and reviewing the top 10 stories on Personal Dividends in terms of popularity (number of visits), it appears that we have been successful on this front. Out of the 10 most popular stories in 2009, only about 50% of the stories were related to money and finance and the remaining 50% were on various other topics.

Here are the top 10 stories on Personal Dividends in 2009 arranged in the order of increasing popularity:

Check these out to see how many you have read, go through the ones that you missed and let us know what you think about these.
