Unfortunately the economic crisis is hurting US so bad that it does not appear likely that US will be represented at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. Most countries in the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, will have pavilions at the Expo. Even European Union is planning a pavilion in addition to its individual member country displays.
The Expo is projected to be the biggest ever and is being labeled as the Olympic games of economy, science and technology. Almost 70 million visitors are projected to attend.
This is not likely to go over well with the Chinese who may take this as an affront. The problem lies in a 1991 law that forbids public funding for such events and so far not enough corporate sponsoship has materialized to support the US representation in the trade fair.
