Universities cutting art programs

While corporations have been cutting their funding for arts and culture around the country, it now appears that the Universities are now also feeling the brunt of the economic downturn and cutting art programs. In some cases, the cutbacks are due to the university endowments losing money in the stock market decline, while in other case the cutbacks are direct result of state budgets being cut.

University of Arizona is the latest in the string to announce cutbacks. Earlier, Brandeis University announced closing of their Rose Art Museum and selling their 6000 pieces in the collection.

While true art will survive and has survived recessions, Great Depression and World Wars in the past, the cutbacks do mean that less young people will be exposed to Art. Somehow it seems Art appreciation is not considered a core skill to function gainfully in society.
