Research published in December 2008 issue of journal Personal Relationships indicates that woman who use the word “I” more often than the word “We” in their instant messages are 30% more likely to stay in the relatiohship 6 months later. Corresponding men were also more satisfied with their relationship.
The research was conducted by Richard Slatcher, Simine Vazire and James Pennebaker and analyzed IM data over 10 days of 68 US dating couples. The researcher used linguistic word count program to analyze the data.
I am trying to understand the causality in this research. It would seem to me that couples in stronger relationships are more likely and more confident in expressing their individuality than the couples in weaker relationships. What do you think?
