A new study conducted over 60,000 subjects in Singapore finds that regular consumption of sweetened soft drinks dramatically increases the risk of pancreatic cancer. The risk is 87% higher among people who drink two or more soft drinks a week.

Pancreas makes insulin that helps in metabolizing sugar. Increased sugar intake requires increasing strain on the pancreas to metabolize the sugar. While this may be a major factor in the observed increase in the cancer risk, it is also possible that regular soda drinkers tend to have other unhealthy habits which may also contribute. Regardless, it is still healthier to stay away from soft drinks when possible. People who consume similar amounts of fruit juice instead of sodas do not have the increased cancer risk.

This study was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

It is important to note that the 5 year survival rate of the patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer is just 5%. Over 230,000 people globally are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year.

I say just stick to water or fruit juice as your regular beverage of choice. Much healthier and saves you money as well.
