Capital preservation has to be accounted for in any well balanced portfolio as does diversification. Focussing on one aspect alone will make any investment life a long one to say the least.

Capital preservation is the way to go in an economic recession. Leave your retirement funds in sound value stocks, but keep emergency funds and other non-retirement capital in cash until the recession is "CLEARLY" over.

There are certainly lots of opportunities in this recession in both the stock market and real estate. Lots of great bargains to choose from.

Miranda, this is sound advice but with the current economic climate and the insane amounts of deficit spending that is now geting piled up, I am getting a little concerned about the US government being able to honor its obligations in the future. I also see several state/local government bankruptcies in the near future. If we do buy government bonds, stay away from munis for a while. Longer term, some selected and geographically diversified corporate bonds may be safer investments than US treasuries.

Arohan’s last blog post..Time to implement bad bank model with Citigroup to save our financial institutions and resolve the credit crisis
