Life Out of Control? How to Take Charge of Your Destiny

Sometimes, we feel trapped in our own lives. I know that I’ve felt like I’m stuck somewhere, and that my life is out of my control. I think we all have those feelings sometimes. And it can be hard to change the pace of your life, and climb out of the trap. However, it is possible to take control of your own destiny.

This is even possible without picking up and moving somewhere else, and completely changing your life around. Indeed, sometimes all that happens if you make a rash move to another city, or abandon your job on a whim, is that you trade one type of trap for another. And, of course, many of us have responsibilities that keep us where we are. This means that you you have to figure out how to escape the trap while still fulfilling your responsibilities. Here are some suggestions:

Figure Out What You CAN Change

Your first step is to take an honest look at your life, and your situation, and figure out what you can change. In every circumstance, there are changes you can make. Whether it’s to work toward changing your attitude, finding things to be grateful for, or whether it’s making a plan to change a few other things in your life.

While there are some things that you don’t have direct control over in your situation, there are some things, that you do control. Take some time to identify those things. They may seem like small things, but they add up. Most of us can control what we eat, what we read, some of our leisure time activities, and how we will approach each day. Focus on those things, and don’t fret so much about the things that can’t be changed.

Make a Plan to Move Forward

The next thing you need to do is make a plan to move forward. We all feel better when we have plans. Consider what it is you want to do. I felt out of control and overwhelmed by a number of small jobs. I wanted to free up some time to work on larger, more fulfilling projects. So, I took the time to plan a course of action that would allow me to cut back in some areas of work to make room for more opportunities.

You can make realistic plans for just about anything. Do you want a specific skill? Plan out how you can get the training, through college or some other program, to gain that skill. Are you interested in starting your own business? Sit down and figure out what needs to happen before you can quit your day job. List the steps that you need to take to reach your goals, whether you want to improve your health, make more money, or just find time to do more of what you want.

Realize that it Doesn’t Happen at Once

Finally, you have to be prepared for the fact that taking charge of your destiny isn’t, for most people, something that happens all at once. It requires dedicated effort. The easy way out, of course, is to just pack up and leave, and hope you can start somewhere else. Unfortunately, without a plan, and without the right attitude and a willingness to work hard, you are likely to end back in a rut, feeling trapped and out of control.

Anything worth doing takes time and effort. Sometimes it’s difficult. There are times that a plan does need to be tweaked (or even abandoned). But “because it’s hard” is not exactly a valid reason. Indeed, you could find yourself even more out of control of your life if you abandon your efforts every time a challenge rises up to meet you.

What do you think? How do you take control when you feel like life is getting ahead of you?
